Another Review of the NLT Hands On Bible

Hands on Bible

Yet another positive review of the Hands on Bible is up at Beyond Laundry. This time, the reviewer is a former schoolteacher and soon-to-be homeschooling mom. She writes:

I am of the mindset that if we are called to have the faith of little children then surely the Word of God is appropriate to read to our kids.

One feature of this Bible are the Key Verse Activities. There are 52 activities to help kids learn, understand and live out important Bible truths. There is one activity for each week of the year. It is one of my favorite features in using this as part of our homeschooling curriculum.

Review of Hands on Bible

Mob Society has a review of the new NLT Hands on Bible for kids.

Since the minute the Hands-On Bible came out of the box, I have not been able to keep my four-year-old away from it! And really, I have not wanted to put it down either! There is activity after activity after activity – hands-on ways to get the Word of God into our boys’ hearts.

My favorite lesson so far:

Isaiah 40:31 – “Strength to Fly”

It’s the old “push the back of your hands into the sides of a doorway and then let go” trick.

The lesson: Stop pushing so hard and God will lift you up and give you new strength! I remember doing this little trick OVER and OVER again once my friends and I discovered it. Imagine the impact of attaching a Scripture and lesson to that experience – that will stick in a boy’s mind and heart!

Isaiah 53 in Hip Hop

Via NLT on Facebook:

Here’s another powerful video by ALERT. It’s a hip hop reading of Isaiah 53 from the NLT, produced by GRIP outreach to youth in Chicago. These readings from the NLT, set in a musical style that’s familiar to these youth, speak to them in a fresh, relevant way.

Review: NLT on the Kindle (1 of Many)

Kindle

We’re new Kindle users in our household. I bought a Kindle for my wife on her birthday because Amazon is currently selling them for $189 and I hoped that she’d be able to use it for quick searches during her group Bible studies.

While the Kindle is great for reading books straight through, it’s less than useful when trying to read something like the Bible wherein you’d like to be able to jump around from book to book or to a specific chapter and verse.

While this is a specific review of the NLT for the Kindle, from what I’ve read in other reviews, every other Bible on the Kindle has exactly the same problems.

My biggest problem so far:

It’s impossible to quickly jump to a specific chapter and verse. My two year old can almost find the correct verse in my paper Bible faster by randomly flipping pages than I can in the Kindle.

KJV vs NLT in Psalm 12:6-7

Psalm 12:6-7 in the King James and New Living Translation read very differently. Bible Monkey explains:

What will probably be odd to some is the New Living Translation gives the impression of a very different meaning to Psalm 12:6-7. This will lead some to imply that the New Living Translation (NLT) just doesn’t cut it as a legitimate translation, however the New Living Translation is precisely correct. The Psalm 12 example highlights eisegesis that some do to create exact certainties in their belief system.

In the King James Psalm 12:6-7 reads:

6 The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. 7 Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.

In the NLT it reads:

6 The Lord’s promises are pure, like silver refined in a furnace, purified seven times over. 7 Therefore, Lord, we know you will protect the oppressed, preserving them forever from this lying generation,
